The locks should keep them busy! If you are starting from Middlewich, the first short staircase is the only tricky one, and the bottom lock (Hurleston?)sometimes requires all crew to stand on one side of the boat so that she goes in at a slight angle!
Make sure they take a camera - two good aqueducts to photograph. Perhaps offer a cash incentive for the one with the best album at the end of the trip - this will get them off and walking!
Allocate agreed jobs beforehand so that there is no arguing about who does what. Who is going to write up the daily log or will they do it on alternate days to see who can produce the most interesting account? Get them prepared - can they tie a few decent knots which won't come unfastened and leave the boat drifting in the middle of the canal? If the hire company doesn't provide one, think of buying the appropriate Nicholsons' Ordnance survey map of the Llangollen I think you need number 4 in the series (sorry, can't check - my set is on the boat) and give them the responsibility of counting out the miles, ear-marking your next mooring for the night, where the facilities are, good places to stop for a visit, etc.
Lots of pubs for meals along the way.
The current is against you going towards Lallangollen, but obviously with you on the return trip
The new Marina offers good cheap mooring in Llangollen.
Lots of interesting shops in the Town for them to buy mementos - look out for the stuffing shop (taxidermist).
We were there on a narrow boat about 3 weeks ago - it's a lovely canal and will be a new experience to add to their scrapbook of memories.
