Default Can you use the english canals for free if you are in a canoe?

and does it have to be an unpowered one, or could it have a small helper motor and still be free?

I was looking into this last year when I was thinking about a canadian kayak and was told it was free if it was under 12ft with or without engine assistance but was told that I must exit the water before the locks, there was also the exception of the privately owned stretches of canal? far to complicated so I purchased a RIB and went to the west coast of Scotland and played about on the sea, brilliant fun!
