Default Why did Jimmy Carter Give away the Panama canal?

I think the Panama canal is still vital to our defense, perhaps we can get Panama to to join as a state.

He didn't give it away, it was always theirs but we built it and agreed to turn it back overto them almost 100 years ago when it was built.

He bowed to pressure.

The Panamanian leader at the time (I can't recall is name) claimed that the canal would be destroyed if the U.S. didn't agree to turn over complete control to Panama by the year 2000.
Carter folded.
