Default Why am I prescribed antibiotics for pain due to a needed root canal?

Hello,
I got my wisdom teeth pulled about a month and a half ago, everything was fine until about two weeks later. I thought the pain was just due to the extraction and it will eventually go away, so I kept taking Motrin around the clock, the pain was pretty annoying. Well the pain got worse, alot worse. I called the dentist and was able to come in 4 days later, in the meantime I took some motrin. He took x rays and noticed some decaying next to the tooth I had a root canal done in 1993! I'm wondering why this happened right after the fact that I had my teeth pulled, I didn't have ANY pain before. Anyway, I have to have a root canal done in a week and in the meantime I have some vicodin es's and amoxicilin. Will the amoxicilin take away the pain so I don't have to go back to the motrin(I worry about the long term effects such as GI bleeding, I've been taking it for a month and a half). What is the purpose of taking antibiotics for this prior to the procedure? It's not an infection it's nerve damage isn't it?
Thanks
